Description

The Worthington Chamber Orchestra presents Peter and the Wolf in a fully staged production that's a joyful and accessible introduction to live orchestral music for young audiences and families. Music Director Antoine T. Clark and the WCO, narrator Jeff Horst, and choreographer Sarah Hixon bring the story to life, giving every character a vivid new dimension on stage.

Prokofiev's genius was to give each character their own instrument: brave Peter speaks through the strings, the excitable bird through the flute, the amusing duck through the oboe, the sneaky cat through the clarinet, the grumpy grandfather through the bassoon, and the fearsome wolf through three French horns. As children follow the story, they discover the orchestra — and Hixon Dance gives every musical character a body to match.

Prokofiev composed the piece in just nine days in 1936, and at its first informal run-through for a dozen children in Moscow, the room went completely silent for the full twenty-four minutes. When it ended, the kids clamored for more, and Prokofiev had to play the final march three times over. Nearly ninety years later, that magic is still very much alive.
